From 1 Kings 12: How to Make Friends and Grow with People

“They replied, ‘Today if you will be a servant to this people and serve them, and if you respond to them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever.’” (v. 7)

The king had a choice:

He could either serve among his people…or he could make them his servants.

Wisdom indicated the former. Leadership equals relationship, and quality relationships are built on loving, selfless servanthood.

But the king didn’t choose that. He chose self. And he lost the trust, friendship, and help of everyone but his own family.

You and I have the same choice, at home and at work and in the church and in our neighborhoods. We can serve ourselves and make everyone subject to our sovereignty. Or we can serve.

I assure you: Only one of these options is effective in making friends and growing a community.

Let’s see if we know better than a king.
