From Psalm 22: The Middle of It

“Our ancestors trusted in you; they trusted, and you rescued them” (v. 4).

“…the next generation will be told about the Lord” (v. 30).

What do you do when you find yourself caught in the middle of it all?

We, like the Psalmist, have known those difficult days, those long nights. We have felt abandoned and opposed. We have cried out, wondering if we’re heard. We have sensed our circumstances closing in.

So we pray like the Psalmist, hoping (but maybe not always convinced) that God is still for us.

Such is life in the middle of it.

What we need to see in Psalm 22 is how all of that frustration is framed. Where can we find our confidence? In the fact that the whole of history teems with testimonies of the goodness of God: “they trusted, and you rescued them” (v. 4). And how can we still have hope? By believing that our testimonies are what will carry Gospel confidence into the next generation: “…the next generation will be told about the Lord” (v. 30).

The theme and the thread through it all is God’s faithfulness. Trust it—and live into it—in the middle.
