Welcome Song: All I Have is Christ

I once was lost in darkest night, Yet thought I knew the way

The sin that promised joy and life, Had led me to the grave

I had no hope that You would own, A rebel to Your will

And if You had not loved me first, I would refuse You still

But as I ran my hell-bound race, Indifferent to the cost

You looked up-on my helpless state, And led me to the cross

And I be-held God's love displayed, You suffered in my place

You bore the wrath reserved for me, Now all I know is grace

Hallelujah all I have is Christ, hallelujah...Jesus is my life

Hallelujah all I have is Christ, hallelujah...Jesus is my life

Now Lord I would be Yours alone, And live so all might see

The strength to follow Your commands, Could never come from me

O Father use my ransomed life, In any way You choose

And let my song forever be, My only boast is You

Call to Worship

Daniel Grim, Elder

1 For my part, brothers and sisters, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, since you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, 3 because you are still worldly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not worldly and behaving like mere humans? 4 For whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not acting like mere humans?

5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So, then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
— 1 Corinthians 3:1-9

Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom and thou my true word;

I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord.

Thou My great Father, and I Thy true son

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;

Thou mine inheritance, now and always.

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,

High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won

May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

My Worth Is Not In What I Own (At the Cross)

My worth is not in what I own

Not in the strength of flesh and bone

But in the costly wounds of love

At the cross

My worth is not in skill or name

In win or lose, in pride or shame

But in the blood of Christ that flowed

At the cross

I rejoice in my Redeemer

Greatest Treasure,

Wellspring of my soul

I will trust in Him, no other.

My soul is satisfied in Him alone.

As summer flowers we fade and die

Fame, youth and beauty hurry by

But life eternal calls to us

At the cross

I will not boast in wealth or might

Or human wisdom’s fleeting light

But I will boast in knowing Christ

At the cross

Two wonders here that I confess

My worth and my unworthiness

My value fixed – my ransom paid

At the cross

Rejoice

Rejoice in the Lord now and always

Sing it again we rejoice

Delight in the love He has shown us

Gratefully lift up your voice

His gentleness among us

Will join our hearts with praise

We gather in His goodness

A family of grace

With each breath He’s given, praise the Lord

In these times we live in, we will praise the Lord

Throughout every season I am sure

We have every reason to praise the Lord

Rejoice and be anxious for nothing

Praying for all that you need

Come with a song of thanksgiving

Lay your requests at His feet

His peace will fall upon us

To guard our hearts and minds

In Christ who reigns eternal

The Shepherd of our lives

Rejoice in the Lord now and always

Tell of the good He has done

Worship the Lord to remember

All of the joy yet to come

The hope that burns within us

The dark cannot destroy

With praise that’s never ending

We say again rejoice

Message

Scripture

5:11 We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. 12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. 13 Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature — for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.

6:1 Therefore, let us leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, faith in God, 2 teaching about ritual washings, laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And we will do this if God permits.
— Hebrews 5:11-6:3

Discussion Questions:

  1. How does this phrase strike you: “By this time you ought to be teachers” (Heb. 5:11)? What is the evidence you have rightly spent your time as a believer? What is the evidence that some of it has been misspent? What calling might you, with increased devotion or training or availability, pursue in God’s kingdom?

  2. Which “elementary teachings” are our “foundation”? Which of them still need to be taught, clarified, or reaffirmed—for you, for your family, and in your church? (See Heb. 6:1-2.)

  3. How can we be “trained” for maturity as believers in the church, and why might that be hard? (See Heb. 5:14.) Consider two of the Bible’s prescriptions for maturity: devotion to the Word of God (1 Tim. 4:6-10) and devotion in the church (Eph. 4:6-11). How can you and your family grow up into these?

Communion

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Oh The Deep, Deep Love

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus

Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free

Rolling as a mighty ocean

In its fullness over me

Underneath me, all around me

Is the current of Your love

Leading onward, leading homeward

To Your glorious rest above

Oh the deep, deep love, all I need and trust

Is the deep, deep love of Jesus

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus

Spread His praise from shore to shore

How He came to pay our ransom

Through the saving cross He bore

How He watches o’er His loved ones

Those He died to make His own

How for them He’s interceding

Pleading now before the throne

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus

Far surpassing all the rest

It’s an ocean full of blessing

In the midst of every test

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus

Mighty Savior, precious Friend

You will bring us home to glory

Where Your love will never end.

Benediction
