Call to Worship
Daniel Grim, Elder
“4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, 5he saved us — not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy — through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit. 6 He poured out his Spirit on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we may become heirs with the hope of eternal life. 8 This saying is trustworthy. I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God might be careful to devote themselves to good works. These are good and profitable for everyone. 9 But avoid foolish debates, genealogies, quarrels, and disputes about the law, because they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 Reject a divisive person after a first and second warning. 11 For you know that such a person has gone astray and is sinning; he is self-condemned.”
How Great Thou Art
Oh Lord, my God
When I, in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
When Christ shall come, with shouts of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art
Whom Shall I Fear? (God of Angel Armies)
You hear me when I call, You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night, it cannot hide the Light
Whom shall I fear?
You crush the enemy underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield, though troubles linger still
Whom shall I fear?
I know who goes before me, I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever, He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies, is always by my side
My strength is in Your name, for You alone can save
You will deliver me, Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear, whom shall I fear?
And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I'm holding on to Your promises, You are faithful,
You are faithful (x2)
You are faithful
Pastoral Point
Before the Throne of God Above
Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love, Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands, My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav'n He stands, No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart
When Satan tempts me to despair, And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there, Who made an end of all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died, My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied, To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me
Behold Him there the Risen Lamb, My perfect spotless Righteousness
The great unchangeable I Am, The King of Glory and of grace
One with Himself I cannot die, My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high, With Christ my Savior and my God
With Christ my Savior and my God
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the One, risen Son of God! (X2)
Before the throne of God above, I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is Love, Who ever lives and pleads for me.
Message
Scripture
“1 For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away. 2 For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment, 3 how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation had its beginning when it was spoken of by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 4 At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to his will.”
Discussion Questions:
What does it mean to “drift away”? Have you experienced it in your own life? How? What is the solution to it—meaning, how do we not drift away?
How can we define “pay attention” in this text? When do you struggle to hold your mind toward faith in the Gospel? How can you practice paying attention?
What makes our salvation “such a great salvation”? How is that generally true in the world? How is it specifically true in your testimony? What steps can you take to “stop neglecting” it?
Communion
Doxology
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Amen.
Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom and thou my true word;
I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord.
Thou My great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always.
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
