Welcome Song: Your Love, Oh Lord

Your love, oh Lord

Reaches to the heavens

And Your faithfulness

Stretches to the skies

And Your righteousness

Is like the mighty mountains

Your justice flows

Like the ocean's tide

And I will lift my voice

To worship You, my King

And I will find my strength

In the shadow of Your wings

Welcome to Sojourn

Advent Reading & Prayer: Matthew, Vashti, Evelyn, Ruth, Lewis, Virginia, and Gloria Grim

2 In the last days
the mountain of the LORD’s house will be established
at the top of the mountains
and will be raised above the hills.
All nations will stream to it,
3 and many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us about his ways
so that we may walk in his paths.”
For instruction will go out of Zion
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
4 He will settle disputes among the nations
and provide arbitration for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plows
and their spears into pruning knives.
Nation will not take up the sword against nation,
and they will never again train for war.

5 House of Jacob,
come and let’s walk in the LORD’s light.
— Isaiah 2:2-5

Here Is Love (Getty)

Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving kindness as the flood

When the Prince of Life, our Ransom, shed for us His precious blood

Who His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise?

He can never be forgotten, throughout Heaven's eternal days

On the mount of crucifixion, fountains opened deep and wide

Through the floodgates of God's mercy, flowed a vast and gracious tide

Grace and love, like mighty rivers, poured incessant from above

And Heaven's peace and perfect justice, kissed a guilty world in love

On the morn of resurrection, mercy filled the thirsty grave

Where the stone of death burst open, springs of life flowed unrestrained

Love no heart could ever measure, joy no sorrows will outrun.

Rush upon the soul believing in the risen, reigning Son.

O this love, vast love of Jesus bids us come and drink and live.

To this weary world of longing, what more could our Savior give?

Now to Christ who fully loved us and who freed us from our sin,

Be all glory and dominion, everlasting praise to Him.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer, our spirits by Thine advent here;

Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight.

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, and order all things far and nigh;

To us the path of knowledge show, and cause us in her ways to go.

O come, Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind;

Bid envy strife and discord cease, fill the whole world with heaven's peace.

Pastoral Point

Adore

You stepped down from heaven, humbly you came

God of all creation, here with us

In a starlIt manger, Emmanuel

Light of the world, here to save

Adore, come let us adore

O come let us adore him

The Lord, worship Christ, the Lord

Let all that is within us …. adore.

Wise men bring their treasures, shepherds bow low

Angel voices sing of peace on earth

What have I to offer, to heaven's King

I will bring my life, my love, my all

Angels sing, praises ring to the newborn King

Peace on earth, here with us, joy awakening

At your feet we fall

Message

Scripture

There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking forward to Israel’s consolation, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Guided by the Spirit, he entered the temple. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for him what was customary under the law, 28 Simeon took him up in his arms, praised God, and said,

29 Now, Master,
you can dismiss your servant in peace,
as you promised.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation.
31 You have prepared it
in the presence of all peoples —
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and glory to your people Israel.

33 His father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and told his mother Mary, “Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed — 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul— that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
— Luke 2:25-35

Discussion Questions:

  1. What does it mean to live a life that is righteous, devout, and looking forward to God’s consolation? When have you seen these traits in another believer? Where do you have room to grow—and how can you stay faithful for a lifetime?

  2. What is the evidence that Simeon trusted the Holy Spirit? How might that be harder to do the longer you live? What is the evidence that you are trusting the Holy Spirit in your own life?

  3. What makes the truth of the Gospel—the truth of Jesus for us—amazing? Why does the way we believe, hold, and proclaim it matter? How does your own testimony of Christ reflect His “amazingness” in the world?

Communion

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

Psalm 150 (Praise the Lord)

You made the starry host

You traced the mountain peaks.

You paint the evening skies with wonders.

The earth, it is Your throne

From desert to the sea.

All nature testifies Your splendor.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Sing his greatness all creation.

Praise the Lord! Raise your voice

You heights and all you depths,

From furthest east to west.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

You reached into the dust

With love Your Spirit breathed.

You formed us in Your very likeness.

To know Your wondrous works,

To tell Your mighty deeds,

To join the everlasting chorus.

Let symphonies resound;

Let drums and choirs ring out.

All heaven hear the sound of worship.

Let every nation bring

Its honors to the King.

A roar of harmonies, eternal!

(Last Chorus)

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Sing his greatness all creation.

Praise the Lord! Raise your voice

You heights and all you depths,

From furthest east to west.

You distant burning stars,

All creatures near and far,

From sky to sea to shore

Sing out forevermore!

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

Benediction
