Welcome Song: Overwhelmed

I see the work of Your hands

Galaxies spin in a Heavenly dance, oh God

All that You are is so overwhelming

If I hear the sound of Your Voice

All at once it's a gentle and thundering noise, oh God

All that You are is so overwhelming

I delight myself in You

Captivated by Your beauty

I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You

God I run into Your arms

Unashamed because of mercy

I'm overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmed by You

I know the power of Your Cross

Forgiven and free forever You'll be my God

And all that You've done is so overwhelming

You are beautiful, You are beautiful

Oh God, there is no one more beautiful

You are beautiful, God you are the most beautiful

You are wonderful, You are wonderful

Oh God, there is no one more wonderful

You are wonderful, God You are the most wonderful

You are glorious, You are glorious

Oh God, there is no one more glorious

You are glorious, God You are the most glorious

Call to Worship

Matthew Grim, Elder

1 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of his resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him, 9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him. 10 For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
— Romans 6:1-11

Dear Refuge of My Weary Soul

Dear refuge of my weary soul,

On Thee, when sorrows rise

On Thee, when waves of trouble roll,

My fainting hope relies

To Thee I tell each rising grief,

For Thou alone canst heal

Thy Word can bring a sweet relief,

For every pain I feel

But oh! When gloomy doubts prevail,

I fear to call Thee mine

The springs of comfort seem to fail,

And all my hopes decline

Yet gracious God, where shall I flee?

Thou art my only trust

And still my soul would cleave to Thee

Though prostrate in the dust

Hast Thou not bid me seek Thy face,

And shall I seek in vain?

And can the ear of sovereign grace,

Be deaf when I complain?

No still the ear of sovereign grace,

Attends the mourner's prayer

Oh may I ever find access,

To breathe my sorrows there

Thy mercy seat is open still,

Here let my soul retreat

With humble hope attend Thy will,

And wait beneath Thy feet,

Thy mercy seat is open still,

Here let my soul retreat

With humble hope attend Thy will,

And wait beneath Thy feet

Ten Thousand Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Bless the Lord, O my soul,

O my soul, worship His holy Name.

Sing like never before, O my soul.

I’ll worship Your holy Name.

The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning;

It’s time to sing Your song again.

Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me,

Let me be singing when the evening comes.

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger,

Your Name is great and Your heart is kind;

For all Your goodness I will keep on singing,

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

And on that day when my strength is failing,

The end draws near and my time has come;

Still my soul sings Your praise unending,

Ten thousand years and then forevermore.

You Alone

When this life has overwhelmed me, and I feel like giving up

I will cling to all You've promised, it will always be enough

When the world around me crumbles, and it's hard to understand

I will run to You my shelter, I am safe within Your hands

Oh You are my help forever

I will not fear, God, You are with me

I know You're near, You'll never leave me, I will trust in You alone

When I'm broken in the silence, I can hear You whispering

You're not alone here in these trials, I will hold You faithfully

Oh You are my help forever

I will not fear, God, You are with me

I know You're near, You'll never leave me, I will trust in You alone

And when my heart and strength have failed me

My God, You won't, Your name is mighty

I will trust in You alone

Oh You are a fortress for the weak

The strength that carries me when I am on my knees

The cross reminds my heart to trust

Your faithfulness and love will always be enough (x3)

Message

Scripture

4 For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, who shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who tasted God’s good word and the powers of the coming age, 6 and who have fallen away. This is because, to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding him up to contempt. 7 For the ground that drinks the rain that often falls on it and that produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and about to be cursed, and at the end will be burned.
— Hebrews 6:4-8

Discussion Questions:

  1. How does this phrase strike you: “By this time you ought to be teachers” (Heb. 5:11)? What is the evidence you have rightly spent your time as a believer? What is the evidence that some of it has been misspent? What calling might you, with increased devotion or training or availability, pursue in God’s kingdom?

  2. Which “elementary teachings” are our “foundation”? Which of them still need to be taught, clarified, or reaffirmed—for you, for your family, and in your church? (See Heb. 6:1-2.)

  3. How can we be “trained” for maturity as believers in the church, and why might that be hard? (See Heb. 5:14.) Consider two of the Bible’s prescriptions for maturity: devotion to the Word of God (1 Tim. 4:6-10) and devotion in the church (Eph. 4:6-11). How can you and your family grow up into these?

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

He Will Hold Me Fast

When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast

When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast.

I could never keep my hold through life’s fearful path;

For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast.

He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast;

For my Savior loves me so, He will hold me fast.

Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast;

Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast.

He’ll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last;

Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast.

For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast;

Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast.

Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast

‘Till our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last!
