Welcome Song: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

O soul, are you weary and troubled?

No light in the darkness you see?

There’s light for a look at the Savior,

And life more abundant and free!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace.

Thro' death into life everlasting,

He passed, and we follow Him there;

O’er us sin no more hath dominion--

For more than conqu’rors we are!

His Word shall not fail you--He promised;

Believe Him, and all will be well:

Then go to a world that is dying,

His perfect salvation to tell!

Call to Worship

Kerry Spencer, Elder

28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28-30

Be Still My Soul

Be still, my soul! the Lord is on your side;

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

Leave to your God to order and provide;

In ev'ry change he faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul! your best, your heav’nly friend

Thru' thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul! your God does undertake

To guide the future as he has the past;

Your hope, your confidence, let nothing shake;

all now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul! the waves and winds still know

His voice who ruled them while he lived below.

Be still, my soul! when dearest friends depart

And all is darkened in the vale of tears,

Then shall you better know his love, his heart,

Who comes to soothe your sorrow and your fears.

Be still, my soul! your Jesus can repay

From his own fullness all he takes away.

Be still, my soul! the hour is hast'ning on

When we shall be forever with the Lord,

When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,

Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.

Be still my soul! when change and tears are past,

All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

The Wisdom and Knowledge of God: Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches

and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!

How unsearchable his judgments

and untraceable his ways!

For who has known the mind of the Lord?

Or who has been his counselor?

And who has ever given to God,

that he should be repaid?,

For from him and through him

and to him are all things.

To him be the glory forever. Amen.

Behold Our God

Who has held the oceans in His hands?

Who has numbered every grain of sand?

Kings and nations tremble at His voice

All creation rises to rejoice

Behold our God seated on His throne

Come, let us adore Him

Behold our King! Nothing can compare

Come, let us adore Him!

Who has given counsel to the Lord?

Who can question any of His words?

Who can teach the One Who knows all things?

Who can fathom all His wondrous deeds?

Who has felt the nails upon His hands

Bearing all the guilt of sinful man?

God eternal humbled to the grave

Jesus, Savior risen now to reign!

Men: You will reign forever!

Women: Let Your glory fill the earth!

From Everlasting

O God, before the mountains were brought forth

Or days of spring and summer filled the earth

From everlasting, You are God

We dwell beneath the stars in ancient skies

A thousand years are nothing in Your sight

From everlasting, You are God

And all our days are held within Your hands

Your perfect love and favor have no end

We rest within the wisdom of Your plan

Everlasting God

O God, when joy and tragedy collide

And loss reminds us life is but a sigh

From everlasting, You are God

O God of light our ways are known to You

But by Your grace You’re making all things new

So satisfy us in our numbered days

Establish every effort while we wait

From everlasting, You are God

Message

Scripture

1 Therefore, since the promise to enter his rest remains, let us beware that none of you be found to have fallen short. 2 For we also have received the good news just as they did. But the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith. 3 For we who have believed enter the rest, in keeping with what he has said,

So I swore in my anger,
“They will not enter my rest,”

even though his works have been finished since the foundation of the world. 4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in this way: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.” 5 Again, in that passage he says, “They will never enter my rest.” 6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience, 7 he again specifies a certain day — “today.” He specified this speaking through David after such a long time:

Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts.

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people. 10 For the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, then, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.
— Hebrews 4:1-11

Discussion Questions:

  1. Consider God’s “rest”: How did Israel’s Promise Place represent rest? (See Exodus 3:7-10, 6:2-8.) What is the rest-promise that remains for believers today? What about rest is Good News in your hearing?

  2. How were God’s people in history “gospelized”? How have we also been “gospelized”? What does it mean to believe—and how is belief evident in someone’s life? How is belief evident in your life?

  3. What is the invitation God has given us, through the Word and in the church? What is the expectation that goes with it? How do we hold it rightly, together, as the church—and how can we invite others into it?

Communion

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Him, all creatures here below;

Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.

On Jordan's Stormy Banks

On Jordan's stormy banks I stand, and cast a wishful eye

To Canaan's fair and happy land, where my possessions lie.

All o'er those wide extended plains, shines one eternal day;

There God the Son forever reigns, and scatters night away.

I am bound (I am bound); I am bound (I am bound)

I am bound for promised land,

I am bound (I am bound); I am bound (I am bound)

I am bound for promised land.

No chilling winds nor poisonous breath can reach that healthful shore;

Sickness, sorrow, pain and death, are felt and feared no more.

When shall I reach that happy place, and be forever blessed?

When shall I see my Father's face, and in His bosom rest?

Benediction
